Marching for Justice in the Oranges

Though I split my time between Princeton and West Orange, I regret that due to scheduling issues and not having a car, I often end up missing activist events in West Orange. I’m making it a New Year’s resolution for 2027 to change that.

Given that, I’ve deeply regretted missing–but have been very pleased to see–Cosecha New Jersey’s impressive anti-ICE march today from West Orange Town Hall through Orange and East Orange. Here’s to many more such marches.

With a new mayoral administration coming in to West Orange this January, my hope is to show up at West Orange Town Hall early in 2027 to make the case for turning Mayor McCartney’s ICE-Free Executive Order into a proper municipal resolution. I’ll also be attending West Windsor’s Township Council on November 23rd to make a similar case there.

It seems realistic to expect that by mid spring of 2027, we can hope to persuade many if not most of the municipalities of both Essex and Mercer counties to adopt ICE Free legislation. As my friend Matt Dragon points out, ICE-Free resolutions are far from a cure-all, but they’re better than nothing.

    • Great shot! Thanks. Thumbs up to your reporting on Mayapple Hill, by the way. Really sad to see it being used as a staging ground for ICE. When I was a kid, we used to make a point of climbing Mayapple Hill each fall from Pleasant Valley Way. There was a bakery where Agave Blue is right now, and we’d get pumpkin pie on the way home. Don’t mean to suggest that all was peachy keen in West Orange back then (it definitely wasn’t). I just mean that learning about ICE at Mayapple Hill ruins the memory.
